Join us for a heart-led conversation about the power of education and how we each can play a role in the learning process 👋🏻
Are you the Zebra in the room? Joan mentions that doctors are often trained to look after the majority, so that they can support as many people as possible, which means that for them it's more important to offer support to the "Horses" in a scenario where 9 out of 10 patients are Horses, compared to the "Zebras" that represent the minority.
In reality, every life matters.
This is why it's crucial for representation to include as many of our differences, because we're each authentically created and the more we get to know human nature, the more we can get to the heart of what it means to be human and to be ourselves – just as we are – beyond any labels, expectations or judgement.
Representation can save lives and introduce us to a more united way of living where collaboration replaces competition and scarcity mindset!
MEET JOAN LEE TU
Joan Lee Tu is the founder of MedULingo, a platform for K-12 medical literacy where she is working towards the vision of making medical education accessible, flexible, and age-appropriate for kids.
It all started when Joan created a single activity sheet to facilitate discussion on her health condition. As a mother and final year medical student, Joan struggled for months with a progressively severe eczema. By the time she managed to diagnose her own chemical allergy from information she found on social media, she was convinced there must be a better way to deliver medical education. Instead of returning to medical school, Joan founded MedULingo in 2022.
As a linguist, Joan brings a descriptive approach to the task of increasing and improving medical literacy (rather than prescribing specific health behaviors and ways of thinking) She is also the author of the book “Raising Doctors: the Med School Admissions Success Guide for Parents of Future Physicians”.
In the words of Joan, “A 6-year-old can learn medicine. So can a 3-year-old.”

WHY GREEN?
Green is the colour of the HEART chakra – the pathway to integrating intuition with intellect. The more we trust our inner guidance, the more we arrive at balanced solutions to complex problems that allow us to view the world as a collaborative community.
Every educator knows the importance of teaching with an open heart. This episode is dedicated to teachers who are ready to learn how to be more open-minded and generous with their storytelling to diverse audiences.
